Composition Day – Senior Schools

A day of composition workshops providing invaluable experience for young composers to experiment and discuss ideas with leading practitioners. With two categories (Junior ages 12-14, Senior ages 15-18) the day will be full of tips and ideas as to how to respond to composition briefs such as art and stories, use improvisation as a vehicle for composition, write successfully for instruments and achieve highly at public exam level.

Workshop Speaker: Jonathan Willcocks
Jonathan Willcocks was born in Worcester, England, and after early musical training as a chorister at King’s College Cambridge and an Open Music Scholar at Clifton College he took an Honours degree in Music from Cambridge University where he held a choral scholarship at Trinity College.
As a composer, Jonathan’s music is published by Oxford University Press, the Lorenz group of companies, MorningStar and Prime Music (represented in USA/Canada by MorningStar). His published music includes major choral works, music for children’s choir, many shorter
pieces (including anthems and secular choral music), orchestral and instrumental works. There are now many recordings of Jonathan’s music, and his music is frequently performed and broadcast in many parts of the world.

Workshop Speaker: Edmund Jolliffe
Edmund studied music at Oxford University and completed a Masters in Film Composition at the Royal College of Music, under Academy Award Winner Dario Marianelli. He also studied on the Advanced Composition Course at Dartington International Summer School and completed an artistic residency at the Banff Centre, Canada, in 2010.
Recent commissions include pieces for The London Gay Men’s Chorus and Trifarious. Recent publications include pieces for OUP’s Flexible Anthem collection and pieces for ‘Piano Star’ published by ABRSM. Prizes in 2016 include the Renée B. Fisher Composer Award, the Ely Consort Advent Composing Competition, the Hendrix College Candelight Carol Competition and the Amadeus Song-writing Competition. His music is published by OUP, Stainer and Bell, ABRSM, Reed and Recital Music.
He also writes music for TV, where shows include the BBC 1 series ‘Who do you think you are?’, the ITV series ‘Long Lost Family’ and Channel Four’s ‘Unreported World’. Currently he is writing music for the Discovery series ‘Homestead Rescue’, a BBC film about George III and recently scored a feature film ‘Revolution a New Art for a New World’.
